TRANSFORMERS Review :D

Wed Jun 24, 2009, 2:38 AM
  • Mood: Cheerful
  • Reading: Bleach
  • Watching: FMA: Brotherhood
  • Playing: Digimon World: Data Squad
I got the opportunity to go to the midnight premier of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

My scoring? 3.5/5

Mind you, it improved from the last one.

I'll put the spoiler free version up top, then I'll warn you before I get into detailings. :3

THE GOOD:
1. More robots!
...1.5 More DECEPTICON interactions
2. Good character conversions
3. Some awesome homages
4. Great soundtrack/graphics

THE BAD:
1. Too much cursing for a PG-13 movie
2. Gangster talk
3. Bad innuendos/fanservice
4. Lame battle lines
5. Too much carnage from the Autobots

It's really like, they took EVERYTHING a step further from the last one. Which made some things REALLY REALLY awesome, yet others REALLY REALLY bad.

Do I think it's worth seeing? I do. Is it worth seeing if your a super-canon fanboy? Probably not.

It's kinda like the Star Trek movie. I thought it was AWESOME, because I understand continuity can be thrown out the window with movies. I am a character driven individual. If the characters are done well, I'm all for it. Other fans hated it, because of the timeline problems and the "mess it made" with it.

Back to Transformers, and I know I'm repeating myself, but it truly is a double edged sword. They made some parts epic that would make the franchise proud; ...While other parts were a disgrace and kind of degraded Transformers in general.

So, if you go to see it, be prepared to see shit; but don't roll in it, please. Just let it go, and enjoy the movie.

My points in depth.

~GOOD~

1. More robots!

There were a couple things that Bay listened to when the fans screamed. This is one of them. There are plenty more robots! There's still plenty a human element, but I was pleased at how many new arrivals there were. Soundwave (OMGSOUNDWAVEWASEPIC. A satellite of all things! AWESOOOOME. Fit him great!), Ravage (I was impressed at how cool he looked!), The Constructicons/Devastator, Jetfire, Arcee (She looked great, but unfortunately, we barely saw anything of her. And when we did, she was in action, so it was pretty blurred).

1.5 More DECEPTICON interactions

The second, and probably the biggest fan cry Bay listened to, was that we wanted Megatron/Starscream interaction. And we got it! Both of them had a LOT more lines, which made me actually appreciate the voices. Not only that, it really let in some insight to their dynamic that the newer transformers fans may not have witnessed. There's nothing like seeing 'Screamer beat around by his angry leader! Truly, these scenes may have made the movie for me. Only problem was, we saw zero to none of the same special treatment for the Autobots.

2. Good Character conversions.

Well, most were good. I already expressed my thoughts on Soundwave. He was really done spectacularly I thought, as well as his "cassettes". I liked Arcee, for the small bit I saw her. Jetfire, for being made an old timer, was actually pretty cool. The only real beef I have with the character designs this time around were the twins. If you thought the regulars were ugly, this just takes it to a new level. Buggy-eyed rats, basically.

3. Some awesome homages

Ohh, there was one, that REALLY made me squee on the inside. Being the armada fan, I was PLEASANTLY surprised to see that Jetfire and Optimus combined. That, my friends, was awesome. They also added in things like the Matrix, Space Bridges (though minorly), the Fallen (I more heard about this from Mark, not sure how accurate it is), Energon, aaand... I'm pretty sure some other things I don't quite remember, or didn't catch. It was nice to point the stuff out in my head, though.

4. Great Soundtrack/Graphics

Of course. I loved the soundtrack from last time, and they impressed me again with the same style. The graphics were also done well (obviously). I think this point is kind of a, "Well, duh", so I won't say more about it.

~BAD~

1. Too much cursing for a PG-13 movie.

Now, I'm not one to mind cursing, by any means. But... holy crap, I was surprised at how much of this shit was put in! Bitch, Shit, and Asshole, including all of its variants, were used often. Someone being called a Pussy made me raise my eyebrow too. It reeeaaally made me wonder how this got to be PG-13. I mean, It shouldn't be R, but PG-15/16 is more like it. They were really pushing the limit on this. I feel sorry for any kid who has to awkwardly watch it with their parents.

2. Gangster talk

Remember last time, we got a bit of this with Jazz? And that was funny, because it was so limited and done IN MODERATION? Not anymore. The twins exclusively talk like this, which, to me, only added to their ugliness. It saddened me to know that they were just trying to win over the 13 year olds trying to be cool by acting the same way. Damn society.

3. Bad innuendos/fanservice

I've never been one for fanservice. Especially when it's every fuckin' time a girl shows up. It made me roll my eyes EVERY time, and that was a lot. There were even a couple panty shots that made me go "WTF? Is this seriously PG-13?" Great way to get the little ones horny young. Then there were the innuendos. And yes, I do indeed enjoy plenty a dirty joke; but seriously? 3/4 of this crap could've been replaced with robot insight and character development. It was just... NOT NECESSARY at all. Not to mention, a couple times it was quite vulgar, even for my taste. I mean... poor Devastator. They gave him balls. BALLS. And then made a joke out of it. It was terrible.

4. Lame battle lines

Ugh... I swear, I wanted to face palm every time the transformers opened their mouth during battle. "Pull over!" was one that stuck out in my mind, as he steered a Decepticon off the road while attacking him. It was just... lame and awkward. It didn't continue through the whole movie, but Jesus Christ, they could've laid off it. Silence is golden, in this case.

5. Too much carnage from the Autobots

The Autobots are supposed to be the good guys, right? The ones who don't like violence? If that's the case, why did I see Optimus tear through a Decepticon's faceplate, or rip it off, IN SLOW MOTION, like five times? Optimus wouldn't be that brutal, let alone showcase it like it was. He's not vengeful in any way, yet he was shown as such while facing the Fallen. It was just... sorely out of character.

****END SPOILERS*****

I think that's all I'll say for now. There are a couple more things I could talk about, but I think I've already spent too much time on this. XD

Good night, I think I'll sleep now.
